The Literacy Project, Inc. is a pending 501(c)3 not for profit organization. Founded in 2009, the mission of the organization is the empowerment of girls in the developing world through female education initiatives and sports enrichment programs.
Our Model
Sustainability – The Literacy Project looks to create programs and initiatives that are sustainable for the community. Our training model, BUILD. TRAIN. SUSTAIN. is applied to all programs and initiatives.
Partnerships – The Literacy Project works to build strong, lasting relationships with in country organizations to accomplish our mission while supporting theirs.
Our Programs
School Sponsorship Program
- Step 1 – Social Business Model creates an influx of funds into The Literacy Project from participating businesses.
- Step 2 – A financial product is purchased, such as a CD, mutual fund, stock or bond.
- Step 3 – The interest or dividends generated from the product is used to finance the education of a girl for one school year.
- Step 4 – That same original donation from Step 1, is used next year to fund the education of the same girl.
- Step 5 – Once that original girl has finished primary and secondary school, the donation is used to send a new girl of primary school age to school.
SHE.play Sports Enrichment Program
“Getting girls off the sidelines and into the game”

Changemaker = A female living in the local community who is motivated and passionate about creating a difference through the coaching of female athletes.
- Step 1 – A female living in the community is identified and selected as a changemaker.
- Step 2 – The changemaker is trained in the areas of coaching, game rules, safety overview, motivational tactics, problem solving, and league organization.
- Step 3 – Staff in collaboration with the changemaker, organize a 5 day after school camp for the females of the community. The camp is a multi-tiered approach involving the females participating in on field athletics as well as workshops that include HIV/AIDS awareness, wellness programs, health basics, and motivational empowerment speakers.
- Step 4 – The changemaker becomes self sufficient, organizing weekly games, recruiting additional changemakers and reporting back participation results to International HQ.
- Step 5 – The changemaker functions as a mentor and role model to the young females in the community, empowering them through sport.
